A story about being a teenage boy and exploring life and girls
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
The Spring Street boys are a group of teenagers who live on or near Spring Street. They are good friends and some of them hang around a pool hall after school. However, they are not delinquents, just out to have a good time. When a boy from another section of town spits in Tony's face, he seeks revenge. Fortunately, the circumstances lead to his meeting a group of boys from the other area and challenging them to a football game. With just 11 players, no organization and the other group being an organized team (Lions) with uniforms, the odds seem formidable. Knowing this, Tony and his friends practice hard, but girls get in the way. When Tony dates Debbie while she is also dating his best friend Ray, the two boys have an argument and Ray quits the team. They cure the dissension at the last minute and Tony's team goes on to beat the Lions. This story is more complicated than the standard sports fiction plot of "underdog team takes on difficult challenge and wins big game." It is also about being a teenage boy starting to find girls interesting and challenging and dealing with those changes. While Tony and Ray have their rivalry over a girl, their friendship and common purpose wins out in the end and they can laugh about what has happened.
