"The Song of the Cardinal" is a fascinating story of the life of a redbird, or Kentucky cardinal, as it is popularly called, who is born in the valley of the Wabash. The author possesses the soul of an artist and a poet, which enables her to invest the story with the charm of a rich and vivid imagination; while her knowledge of the habits and peculiarities of the redbird and the love she feels for the cardinal family impart a living interest to her work that makes the reader enter into the joys and tribulations, the triumphs, failures, and final victory of the hero, with much the same personal interest one feels in the leading figures of a well-told romance of life. Into the web and woof of the story the author has also woven a beautiful picture of an old man and woman who through the song and the presence of the cardinal are brought again into the loving, sympathetic nearness to each other that marked the golden days of their early married life.
I love this book. My daughter surprized me with finding a copy of it,after I'd envied a very expensive copy "discovered" on a rarebooks shelf in a used book store. ( I am surprizing her, years later, buying her a copy today :-) , I HAVE to keep mine! ) I hand raised a nest of abandoned cardinals as a young girl..such wonderful birds...Gene Stratton-Porter knew them well.. I became a fan of all of her books. Love them

My daughter had to read this book for a school project. She enjoyed it a lot; it has a good message like many Gene Stratton-Porter books.

I was so surprised to get this book and find that it really is a story all about a cardinal. I have read other books by Gene Stratton Porter and loved them. I think I would have known this book was written by her even if I did not know when I started the book. The describtive phrases are so good and so realistic. She must have observed cardinals for a very long time to be able to write this. Very Good! PK Nica

This was my first time reading a Gene Porter Stratton book. A friend loaned it to me. I thought the story was sweet, well written and the pictures wonderful. I would love to visit her home site some day. And I have ordered more of her books as well as a copy of "The Song of a Cardinal" for my mother, who is an avid bird watcher!
A sweet simple story.

I bought this book after reading FRECKLES, the only other book I have read by GENE STRATTON PORTER. I found the book to be surprisingly entertaining since it is such a simple story. This book is written in such a way that you can almost see the cardinal. It may not reach everyone in the same manner but if you're in the mood for a calm relaxing read ,this is it.
