Most comprehensive one-volume account.

The famous Somme battle has justly inspired many excellent works, but this one has unique value. Not just the story of that terrible first day, but the entire five month campaign is chronicled here on a daily basis, making it possible to track a particular unit throughout the battle, with this book alone. The reader will find the detailed but compact narrative accompanied by clear, annotated trench maps, photos carefully chosen to relate to the actions described, Orders of Battle for both British and German forces, a bibliography, and a splendid index. Essential for historians and readers of the Great War, Western Front buffs, militaria collectors, descendents of combattants, and students. If you could have only one history of the Battle of the Somme, this would be the best choice. (Mr. McCarthy is also the author of "Passchendaele: The Day- by-Day Account", a similar work of equal interest.)
