Pat Hudson distills her twenty-plus years of psychotherapy and radio counseling down to four essential solutions that can help women create the lives they want. These are the thinking solution, the action solution, the dreaming solution, and the feeling solution. The thinking solution focuses on the questions you ask yourself about problems, helps you identify the stories you construct around them, and guides you to ways to alter those stories or create new ones. The action solution operates from the assumption that the way to change your life is to communicate for actions, change what you do, and change your patterns with others. The dreaming solution teaches you how to use imagery, self-hypnosis, and dreams to engage your unconscious mind in change. The feeling solution, used when you feel sad or unresolved about an issue, involves creating a ritual to leave the past behind and embrace the future. Hudson offers examples of how to apply these solutions to the main aspects of a womans life: relationships, parenting, and work. She also covers the more difficult challenges of recovering and escaping from violations and violence.
My professor gave my marriage and family therapy class a list of books on which to base our graduation thesis. We were told that we could pick any of the books. I promptly scanned down the list, and the title stuck me.... "The Solution-Oriented Woman: Creating the Life You Want." Ever since I was a young girl, I've always looked for ways to empower myself and the relationships I have been in. This book looked perfect to basis my thesis upon. I have read the book twice now for the purpose of my thesis and I love the book! I am learning so much in the process, it is un-believeable. It is time that women stop asking, "why did this happen?" and starting asking, "how can I change this?" It is possible to change the situation you are currently in; either by taking ACTION, by meditation, or self-hypnosis. This is a great book to use for a marriage and family therapy class or if you are in a "rut." I found the book to be a very empowering book for women! Each chapter deals with serious issues, so it is refreshing that Dr. Hudson adds a bit of mid-western humor into the mix. I have already told the joke on page 17 about a million and a half times! I have not yet come to experience the joy of marriage or having beautiful little children, but I have a very close family who shares their experiences very candidly with me on a regular basis. So needless to say, I could relate to numerous stories that Dr. Hudson told.:)I look forward to marriage and having a loving family in the future. I certainly will use "solution-oriented approaches" in my life. This is a simply marvelous book! I highly recommend it to everyone. There is a place for everything in this world and I made 100 percent sure that this book had a place on my overly-crowded book shelf. I am positive you will all find that to be true also. Like my lovely grandmother says, "A place for everything, and everything in its' place."
