The Sod House

My name is Fred Dietrich and I'm seven years old. I live with my Mommy and Daddy, two older brothers, and two older sisters on a small farm in Holly, Colorado. My sister Ruby told me I was born in a sod house north of town, but she won't take me over to see it. She says it makes her sad, and I'm afraid to go by myself.I don't remember it cause we moved from the sod house to this farm when I was a baby. One day when we were rabbit hunting near the sod house, Ruby decided to tell me about it. She made me promise not to tell anyone. She said the whole family got sick from bad well water, and my sister, Frederica, died from the fever. I was born right after that and Mommy named me after Frederica. I never knew I had another sister. Each time I think about how I got my name it makes me sad.Near Christmas, my friend Billy and me read a story about a bank robber, and think he's the same man me and Ruby saw one time near the sod house. Billy thinks there's buried bank loot there; he doesn't know I was born in that house. On Christmas day we plan to sneak out the sod house and search for treasure. I just want to see inside.
