Book Overview

Dorie Dilts is about to move from California to New Jersey, and instead of seeing this as the worst thing to happen to her in her 13 years, Dorie sees this as a great opportunity--an opportunity to reinvent herself as one of the popular crowd, that is. When she arrives at her new school, she immediately sets out to determine who is the most popular and how they got that way. She quickly deduces it's a group of girls whom she dubs the Holly Trinity...

hilarious middle school fiction

Budding scientist and geeky middle-schooler Dorie Dilts decides to take advantage of moving cross country from California to New Jersey to conduct an experiment: how to become popular. Through scientific observation, she determines the popular clique at her new school and resolves to become part of it, whatever it takes. Told in the first person, this is a laugh-out-loud story for the middle school years. I thought this story of a geeky girl trying to become popular was hilarious, and one that many girls are likely to identify with. I especially liked the way the author incorporated the heroine's interest in science into surviving middle school. The sequel is just as funny.

Most 13-year-old girls would be devastated to learn that their family has to move across the country from sunny California to New Jersey. But most girls aren't Dorie Dilts. Dorie is a scientist, and a bit of a loner. She has long been observing the popular girls at school, envious of their friendships. So moving to a completely different school makes her excited, because now she has the perfect opportunity to put her scientific experiment into play. Objectives: To get popular. Hypothesis: If she gets dumped by Grant, then she will become popular. Results: Inconclusive...perhaps? The first in THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS OF DORIE DILTS, DUMPED BY POPULAR DEMAND is inventive, smart, and funny. While Dorie may be wise in all things academia, her social awkwardness is something that girls of any age can relate to. Dorie's discovery of true friendship and the meaning of popularity will be unforgettable in this humorous novel that has more heat than an exothermic reaction! Reviewed by: The Compulsive Reader

Absolutely A"dorie"able

What a wonderful book! The heroine, Dorie Dilts, is a smart, caring, creative young lady who - despite feeling the pressures of school and peer groups - is able to make mature decisions and show what independence and friendship are all about. Hysterical and heart warming! I loved every minute of it and gave out several copies as holiday gifts. Everyone has given it rave reviews. Can't wait for the second one! PG Kain - keep on writing about Dorie - she's amazing!

So much fun!

A very funny and entertaining book, with interesting and very human characters..... Kain makes every word count, and never lets a chance to add something fun go by. Every main character had two or three quirks (loved cooking, loved old movies, loved science) that made them come alive, even the adults. The author makes you care about the lead characters; you want to go have lunch with Dorie, and who wouldn't want to take Dixie home for good! Even the hero had unexpected dimensions. I started reading this because it was a present from a friend, and ended up being soooo sorry it was over. More Dorie, more!

Cute story about a (gasp!) smart girl

This is an adorable book about a smart, strong girl who, like most of us, can't help but get caught up the popularity game. I love that Dorie is totally into science and uses it to figure out what makes certain people (like the Holly Trinity) popular.
