An enchanting journey into a world of magic and mystery

As a new Literature teacher in my school last year, I was told that I would be teaching The Snow-Walker's Son to classes of 14 year-olds. Once I started reading the novel, teaching it became far removed from my mind. I was totally engrossed in the magic and mystery that Fisher had woven into the characters and into the storyline. Fisher's use of Nordic mythology and tales in her story of fantasy and mystery will capture the imagination of both young and not-so-young readers. Intriguing characters combine with wonderful language and strong imagery to make this novel work. This is not a simple book easily understood by anyone who knows how to read; many of my students, not having a good command of English, found it difficult to understand. Young readers need to have some reading experience to be able to make sense of what is happening. If that hurdle can be overcome, The Snow Walker's Son should prove a captivating read.
