Nothing chills the blood of a soldier on the battle field more than the crack of a rifle shot and the cry of "Sniper " A skilled sniper can stop even large units in their tracks and damge the enemy's morale. The Sniper at War looks at the impact and role of the sniper from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. From the very beginning, snipers risked their lives for the chance of a clean "kill." Haskew looks at how the art of sniping in war has become more professinoal and specialized, with dedicated training courses and equipment. Famous snipers throughout history are profiled, such as Vasili Zaitsev, a hero of the battle of Stalingrad, with testimonies from individual snipers who took part in modern conflicts from Vietnam to Afghanistan and the Gulf.
My 11-year old son wants to join the Army and be a sniper when he grows up. I bought this book for myself first because I am interested in military history and long-range shooting and will send it to him when I am done. I read a review elsewhere that described this as a "coffee table" book which I can relate well to. Author Michael Haskew has done a wonderful job of putting together a history of the sniper craft from its humble beginnings to the present day. The book is well illustrated, also. I was hesitant to buy this book at first because the prices are just that, pricey! I was fortunate to find this book new on the shelf at my local military exchange for a song at $21.95. I only read a few books each year, whenever some topic piques my interest. This book did it for me!

Excellent survey of sniper warfare

Michael Haskew has written an excellent historical survey of the employment of snipers in warfare. Haskew's book focuses on the tactical deployment of snipers and he uses a variety of anecdotal accounts to illustrate his main points. He does not include a lot of technical information on arms and equipment, but concentrates more on the human side of the sniper's craft. The books contains a few typographical errors that do not significantly detract from the text. Overall, a readable and interesting account of snipers and their place on the battlefield
