A nice book about a nice person in a not-so-nice life

I think this book has previously been published in Britain as I read it many years ago and have just gone back to it again. If you like the sort of person who makes the best of life, complains little, yet has an iron will, then this is the ideal Sunday afternoon read for you. Sweet and gentile in the best possible ways, I would recommend it to all those who appreciate good writing.
