This a three book series that provides a quick screener, fluency norms, charting, and methodology for increasing reading accuracy and rate. I particularly like the primary level that guides students systematically through letters/sounds, sight words, word families, phrases, and ultimately non-fiction readings. The goal is to increase rapid recognition of words in a timed format. By keeping goal setting reasonable, aka the norms provided (Hansbrouck), the focus can include prosody and awareness of suprasegmental aspects such as punctuation. The concept is simple yet valuable for our struggling readers. Comprehension activities can be incorporated as the ultimate goal once automaticity has been established. Reading teachers would be able to do this readily, but those less familiar with comprehension strategies may not be able to make the "leap." I am so impressed with all three levels of this program and encourage serious reading specialists to take a look. It does bridge the gap between decoding and comprehension and is a tool that will be appreciated by reading teachers and those familiar with reading methodology. Keep in mind that this is not a complete reading program, but it is an excellent solution for guiding and managing fluency goals in the classroom. One more comment: I used this program (secondary level) with my 9th grade dyslexic students and we saw an average of three to four grades level of growth in fluency rates in one academic year.
