fast-paced romantic fantasy

Slavers arrive at the port city of Para Dubh where they kidnap teenager Lizzy Petrule; deserted at the dock by her suitor Justin. Chained she is taken across the Great Sea to the Meridal Empire. Worried about his missing daughter, Lizzy's father Leon and Justin who feels guilty begin a search and soon learns the fate of the lass; a sex slave to please the hundreds of enslaved battle sylphs. Justin, Leon and his shape-sifting battle sylph Ril begin a rescue attempt. First they must enter a city where danger is everywhere. Once inside the citadel, the duo must find a way to the harem where Lizzy is just one more throwaway female to "feed" the hunger of the raging battle sylphs. This is an action-packed romantic fantasy as the heroic trio struggles to surmount magical and mundane attacks to mute their rescue efforts. Fast-paced from the moment Lizzy is abducted, L.J. McDonald paints an intriguing corrupt empire that readers will compare with the Sylph Valley. With the return of support players from the first tale The Battle Sylph, fans will relish the saga of The Shattered Sylph. Harriet Klausner

Buy it!!!

This is going to be an excellent series! Bought and read Battle Sylph Friday, ran out and bought Shattered Sylph today! I really like this world that L. J. McDonald is creating. The battle sylphs beginnings in this realm are so horribly painful, and yet some still manage to find true love. I thought this book was interesting because, to me, it looked at the sylph/human relationship from a d/s perspective - the pleasure and peace that can be achieved by the complete giving up of self to another; what is lost, and what is gained; and ultimately that the loss is not worth the gain. I found the relationship between Leon and Ril more interesting than that of Ril and Lizzy. How does one forgive one's self for unknowingly inflicting horrible pain on someone you love? How do you forgive that pain, and allow yourself to love and trust the one that hurt you? Four stars only because I thought the book was too long in the sense that the main characters ran into brick walls and agonized for about 100 pages too many - I would rather those 100 pages been used to tell us more about this world, or update us on how things progress in the Valley, or the growth pains of kingdom building, or even lay some groundwork for the next book. Plus, we are left hanging on one of the troublemaking characters - Justin was filled with hate, loathing, and probably some envy - what trouble is he going to cause, or how is he going to get past it? Again, pages were wasted on Justin and he didn't really add or contribute anything to the story. Still, I am looking forward to future books in the series! So far, the series has been pretty light on romance and wooing - the sylph pretty much falls for the heroine after one look at her, the heroine is blasted with lust for the sylph, and we are done with the romancing. Wondering, if once the series gains popularity, it will evolve away from romance into more of a fantasy series a la the Black Dagger Brotherhood series? I'm thinking it could easily slip into that genre - my .02 :-).

Even better

Not often can I fall in love with a second in a series book and like it more than the first in the series but that is what happened here (and the 1st book was a 5 star, that makes this technically a 6 star?). The book was so good, I missed dinner with the family, read it straight through the night. The book has everything and I can't wait for book #3. I highly recommend reading book #1 (The Battle Sylph) before reading this book and then prepare to spend every minute totally swept up in the story.
