Born in 1892, on his father's tabacco farm, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the sharecropper was the ninth of sixteen children. He moved to Amelia County, Virginia in 1920 and started his own tobacco farm, along with his new bride. In addition to farming the old fashioned way, using horses, he raised six sons.
