Vowing to never allow another man to dominate her after her brutal husband's death, Lady Carroll is shocked when her friend recommends she pursue a relationship outside the bounds of matrimony, until... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Another Joy Reed story for me although not quite up to the two previous titles I have read by this author. Lady Carroll, in her mid 20s, is widowed, having been married off very young to the Earl of Carroll. All was not right in the marriage - he is portrayed as a little shallow and a bit of a fribble - a selfish man who could not seem to understand his young wife. Lady Carroll has come to London for the season and is staying with old friends. She is determined not to marry again for she feels marriage means surrendering herself to much to a husband. When she meets a young man at a fashionable party, she is charmed by him and finds, for the first time in her (not extensive) experience a man to whom she can freely and happily open her mind. However, in a reverse of the Cinderella story, Mr Adam Wainwright is of lower social standing and although they begin to develop sincere and deep feelings for each other, both hold back. Lady Carroll, not wanting another husband, offers to become his lover. Mr Wainwright believes his social standing renders him ineligible. Thus, true love seems to be thwarted. Eventually, as in all romances, these two learn that you have give a little to get a little! She realises that happiness can be hers by lowering her guard a little and Adam accepts that she is being totally honest in her acceptance of him and his circumstances. Eventually, they settle down to domestic bliss, great happiness, sexual fulfilment and charming children on his country estate. Again, with Joy Reed, it's all about character development and the H/H learning to reach out and accept the gifts on offer. Recommended.
Touching insights into the life of a tortured heart.

I found Ms. Reed's work to be full of charm and insight. The characters had a special sense of grace and feeling cast into a world of gentle grace. The author must truly be blessed in her life and talent!
