Matt Braden is over-protected by his mother, who refuses to let him do anything on his own. But his father has promised that after his sixteenth birthday, and before school starts in September, Matt can take the boat, pack camping gear and spend a weekend by himself to explore islands across the strait from the Logging camp where he lives. Matt plans to explore two islands. On one island a steer is reported to have been abandoned years ago and left to fend for itself. It is inconceivable to Matt, who hopes to become a veterinarian, that anyone would be so callous as to desert an animal. He will go and see for himself how the steer has managed to survive all these years. On the second island, there is said to be the oldest burial totem on the British Columbia Coast, perhaps even the oldest one in North America. Matt's plans are interrupted when a broken leg puts him in Campbell River hospital. There he meets Joel, another sixteen-year-old, and Matt reluctantly agrees to let Joel accompany him on his quest for the steer and the burial totems.
