The Super Secrets of Ms. Snickle's Class

I picked up this book for a friend's son and ended up reading it myself before I passed it along. What a creative, funny, and deeply satisfying read! I loved it at 30 and I'm sure that I would have loved it at nine. What is really special about this book is the way that it mixes the silly and the profound, so that when you are done you have both had a great laugh and thought about the implications of telling or not telling secrets. The author avoids pat solutions and doesn't preach to kids. Rather, she really enters into their world and conveys what is funny, worrying, and confusing to them. Another great aspect of the book is the mixture of magical and non-magical characters. The kids' secrets range from bedwetting and actually liking a younger sister to having a Mom who is the tooth fairy and having been transformed from a swan to a little girl. I thought this worked really well because it both plays into kids' imaginations and relates to them in a down to earth way. All in all, I would highly recommend this book to all 7-9 year olds and their parents!
