Solid execution of the Harlequin genre. Good people with good intentions held apart by misunderstandings and the manipulations of a couple of bad actors. Truth be told, it reminded me a bit of "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and "Jude the Obscure," what with plots of pregnancies, fake pregnancies and mysterious letters that never get to their destinations. But to be honest with you, I'd rather read this book than one by Hardy, because the world's screwed up enough as it is without reading a book that'll make you even more miserable. This book, while admittedly schmaltzy and not quite totally believable, at least provides a satisfying and happy conclusion. Read and enjoy.
