This book is really fun, and very original. The illustrations are adorable. The story is about what happens in a school in a wood ( Murky Wood ) when th e human children are in bed---"now it's time for the monsters to go to school." The monsters are kind of cute monsters. Miss Moist is their teacher who takes attendance and makes sure the students take care of their classroom pets such as bats, slugs, spiders, etc.. The student's lessons are such things as daydreaming, making a mess, helping spiders build webs, putting grimy rings around sinks, etc.. For science, they learn to make slime to eat as a treat. Instead of lunch period, they have dinner and eating with your mouth open gets a gold star. Next, it's time to practice howling and noisiness. They do other things during their night at school, but at the end, everything is cleaned up so you would almost never know that monsters come to your school when you are sleeping..."Have you noticed anything strange in your classroom lately?" The illustrations and the different characteristics of each monster are what make this story so much fun. If it weren't for that, this story wouldn't be as interesting.
JUST GREAT!

Beyond being fun to read and look at -- the drawings are great -- I find this book really triggers kids' imaginations. Laura, who is 7, says she wants to meet all the monsters in Murky Wood. Terry, California.
