This book reprints the original (mimeographed) 1963 National Park Service Historic Site Survey of the Santa Fe Trail, conducted by William Brown. It begins with a 70-page historical overview of the Trail itself; the remaining 130 pages or so describe major sites along the Trail, beginning with Old Franklin, MO, and includes information on buildings, river crossings, forts, famous springs, and other geological and man-made sites along the way. All the maps that were part of the original work, many of them in great detail, are included, as are many of the photographs (additional photos were supplied by the publisher Gregory M. Franzwa). The book is not as detailed as some other Trail guidebooks, such as Marc Simmons's FOLLOWING THE SANTA FE TRAIL or Gregory Franzwa's own SANTA FE TRAIL REVISITED and essential MAPS OF THE SANTA FE TRAIL, but it's an excellent place to start for anyone interested in the Trail.
