The Saint on the Old Continent

Leslie Charteris' _The Saint in Europe_ (1953) is a solid collection of seven adventures of Simon Templar ("the Saint"). This collection marked the 25th anniversary of that Boisterous Buccaneer of Crime. It was preceded by _Saint Errant_ (1948) and was followed by _The Saint on the Spanish Main_ (1955). Most of the stories in this collection were aired on the TV series starring Roger Moore between 1962 and 1966. The stories (along with their geographic locales) are: "The Covetous Headsman" (Paris), "The Angel's Eye" (Amsterdam), "The Rhine Maiden" (the Rhine), "The Golden Journey" (Tirol), "The Loaded Tourist" (Lucerne), "The Spanish Cow" (Juan-Les-Pins), and "The Latin Touch" (Rome). The first two stories are mysteries that the Saint stoops to solve on rare occasion. The first involves a murderous Frenchman, and the second involves some double Crostics with a gigantic, rare diamond. Two stories ("The Rhine Maiden" and "The Golden Journey") feature some unusual heroines. In the first tale, it is an eighteen-year-old girl whom Templar judges to be what a Rhine beauty _ought_ to be like. In the second tale, she is a spoiled heiress whom Simon kidnaps and takes on a backpacking trip (for her own good, of course!). In "Maiden," Simon ends up concealing a murder. In "Journey," he teaches the proper way to scramble eggs. In "The Loaded Tourist," the Saint tangles with a couple of Swiss thugs and is forced to employ his alias of Sebastion Tombs.
