These days, being a kid means following rules. Lots of rules. Want a piece of cake? You've got to eat your peas first. Getting dressed? Make sure you've got clean underwear on. It's getting so you... This description may be from another edition of this product.
My second graders loved this book. We read it in conjunction with our Learning.com computer skills program. It is an easy read, and the illustrations are comical. There is one illustration where a cartoon character is in his underwear (page 2) that has the caption "Don't forget clean underwear". It is not vulgar, but just wanted to give a heads up. I would recommend this book.
The Rules

I teach computers and I used this book to start the year off to explain that the computer room has rules too. I read it to my K-2nd graders but had to read it to my 3rd and 4th graders because it went over so well. I had their undivided attention reading this book. It is cute and to the point. The pictures are great too! You can't go wrong with this book when it comes to teaching rules.

"The Rules" is a rhyming book that simultaneously reminds and pokes fun at the rules that children must follow at home. It is accompanied by excellent drawings that illustrate why we all should chew with our mouth closed, wear clean underwear, and not blow milk bubbles with our nose! This book gave us some great laughs - my kids loved the great drawings, and my wife loved the memories of childhood that were brought back for her!
An Excellent Ruling for "The Rules"

This book should strike a familiar chord with most people - it humorously pokes fun at the rules our parents made us follow as children, and that we make our own children follow now. Marty Kelley combines some screamingly funny illustrations (there is a great one referring to wiping your nose!) with clever poetry. The cover illustration alone makes the book worthwhile! The children love it, and don't seem to mind being reminded of the rules that they must follow! What a bonus! I look forward to seeing more work by Marty Kelley!
