Botanical drawings of medicinal plants, taken from books by two medical physicians, illustrate this address book. William Woodville's Medical Botany (1790-1793) contains descriptions and pictures of all the plants in the Royal College of Physicians' list of materia medica (plants used in medicine). His illustrator was James Sowerby (1756-1822), the major English botanical artist of his generation. Ferdinand Vietz was an Austrian physician, whose Icones Plantarum (1800-1820) was illustrated by Ignaz Alberti, an accomplished Viennese artist. A selection of hand-coloured engravings from each of these books illustrates this address book.
