While not a perfect book, I did appreciate that this was not the typical Christian romance. In fact, I would hardly classify it as such (though there is a mention of a kiss, and such). In the simple words there often reside wisdom, sometimes wit. Andrew Lewis, a young doctor, thinks he has his life planned out. He will be a missionary, with lovely nurse, Kate, as his wife and fellow laborer. But when tragedy strikes, Andrew doesn't know what to do . . . and the foreign mission field seems the last thing he wants. When Andrew reads an old family journal from the 1800s, will his mind be changed? Just a few things I disagreed with, such as the idea of women going off to be missionaries on their own, and a bit of Arminianism. However, the main theme of this book is surrendering one's life to God's will, wherever that may take one, and loving Him above all else. There is also a good part about having a multi-generational mindset.

A winding path of self-examination - the road winds on. For Andy Lewis it is a long road. Engaged to lovely Kay Putney, and planning to go to the Congo after they marry, Andy marvels at the wonderful life in store for him. As a doctor and nurse they plan to help Andy's father, Dr. Thomas Lewis, with his medical missionary work in Africa. The winding road is not an easy one, as Andy soon realizes. Kay, convicted that her planned ministry is motivated by her love for Andy rather than her dedication to God, breaks their engagement. Crushed, Andy retreats to examine his own motivation and dedication. Conflict, decision, desire, love - all pervade Andy's search for God's leading. His father's death, a meeting with Kay, and the answer to his search as only God could give these are the elements of this gripping novel.
