Good intro to the basic skills of college English

The Rinehart Reader is really good introduction to the basic skills of composing college level essays. Each style of essays (Narrative, Definition, Comparison and Contrast, etc) is tackled separately with an introductory section that explains the style in depth as well as key tips in utilizing that particular style. This introduction is then followed with selected readings from a wide range of authors. I thoroughly enjoyed being reintroduced to the writings of Virginia Woolf (If Shakespeare Had a Sister), Shirley Jackson (The Lottery), Alice Walker (In search of Our Mothers' Garden), Brent Staples (Black Men and Public Space), Amy Tan (Two Kinds), Richard Rodriquez (None of This is Fair), N. Scott Momaday (The Way to Rainy Mountain), James Thurber (University Days) among others. The first section (Part One) does quite an excellent job in setting the student up to successfully utilize the text with engaging chapters featuring writers talking about why reading and writing fascinates them and is important to society. The pieces from Donald Murray (Reading as a Reader), Richard Wright (Discovering Books), Wendell Berry (In Defense of Literacy), William Zinsser (Style) and Jacqueline Berke (The Qualities of Good Writing) were particularly poignant and helpful in dealing with the material. Overall, I found myself engaged throughout the text and felt that I left the work as a better reader and writing. While most people who are purchasing this are doing so simply because it is required for a course, I would highly recommend this to any advance high school student looking to get an early start on ACT/SAT prep and college level english. (As a note to the other reviews. All text books are over priced. Its like buying brand name pharmaceuticals. They charge that much simply because they can.)

The Rhinehart Reader

I was very ecstatic with the condition of the book, it was more than what I expected. I told my teacher that I was able to get the book at such a great price and in such great condition, he said, "That's the way to do it".
