Even though this book is just a few years younger then me, I still find it equal to the latest books on this war. Very well written. Nicely illustrated. Very informative. A must have for anyone interested in the American revolution.
Timeless!

This book is worth the time just for the beautiful pictures but the real value of it is how it brings to life the people and places in the Revolutionary War. How fortunate his children were to be taken to the various sites and told about the charactors who set our country free. What wonderful parents to make history come alive for their children. Seeing each site in a season similiar to when our ancestors experienced it was a great idea. Makes me wish I could have gone with them.
The Past Made Present

Of all the books written about the Revolutionary War this remains, for me, the most captivating. McDowell takes the reader on a journey to the historical sites directly related to the war. The weather conditions at the time and place of significance are thoroughly described along with the thoughts that were presumably felt by those who took part and some that have actually been documented. As readers follow McDowell and his family on trips through Boston Harbor, Fort Tichonderoga and other sites, one vicariously experiences the revolution which shaped our country and ultimately our lives and our future. This will enstill a better appreciation for the Revolutionary War at large and more specifically, the men and women who fought it.
