Absolutely imperative reading

This book is the necessary antidote to the poison of the modern Bible versions which has been so uncritically swallowed by the majority of Christians. There are some good studies done since his but Burgon's is THE definitive one, especially since he was a contemporary and the scholarly equal -- really the superior -- of the revisers of the Bible that came out in 1881. Burgon makes it clear that the revisers violated their agreement to do the most minimal necessary revision of the Authorized Version, by instead substituting their own preferred Greek text, for which they had no authorization whatever, and by making some 36,000 irritatingly unnecessary, meaningless and inelegant changes in the English -- which in fact anyone with the slightest appreciation for the English language can see for yourself if you'll take the time to do it. Burgon shows in no uncertain terms that the Greek text they substituted in the place of the Received Text (on which the Authorized (King James) Bible and its predecessors had been based), was already known to be corrupt -- and its type was even known to be corrupt by the King James translators themselves. It was apparently the appeal of the text's being so ancient and so much more in accord with Westcott and Hort's own modernist/rationalist anti-supernatural bias that led them to prefer it. They even invented a notion that their preferred text was the authentic text and the Received Text the corruption, making up a completely imaginary early revision to account for the differences. The differences are important, involving the eradication of many of the most familiar verses known to English speaking peoples since the King James. They claim those verses were added; Burgon shows they were cut out of the Westcott and Hort text, that they were already part of the original writings and that the corrupted texts that now underlie all the modern Bibles had been mutilated, even by known heretics. And once they got the committee to accept it, against the wisdom of some, now it is accepted blindly by people who don't know any better. So to break the spell you need to know what Burgon has to say about it. At times it can be tedious but there's no other way to answer what Westcott and Hort did to the Greek and the English of our Bible than to take apart each example in detail, and in fact I wish Burgon could have taken apart every last case of it because his judgment is so compelling, but that was simply impracticable. And by the way, the reviewer who said Burgon was opposed to revising the KJV at all is simply wrong; he was objecting to the destructive and unnecessary changes made by the revising committee instead of the minimal changes they contracted to make.

The forgotten voice in the textual debate

Revision Revised is a compilation of three articles by Dean Burgon, written in response to the New Greek text and the subsequent revision of the Authorised Version completed in 1881. Throughout the book, Dean Burgon proves without a doubt that the next Greek text as propounded by Dr. Westcott and Hort are corrupt, and that the new Revision is unreliable, and nothing but a bane to English reading Christians around the world. Providing abundant evidences, coupled with irrefutable logic, Burgon mercilessly critiques the text, translation and theory of the Revised Version of the Bible. He writes with an enjoyable flair, employing wit, sarcasm and candour, yet in a most serious manner, to make for a pleasant and engaging read. I. The New Greek Text Firstly Burgon examines the textual basis upon which the revisionists translate the New Testament from. He looks critically into the new Greek text as formulated by Drs Westcott and Hort (W & H), and proves them to be utterly corrupt, and not to be regarded as the inspired or pure word of God. In fact, this revision of the Greek was a step in the revision of the English Bible that was not even called for. Nonetheless, he examines the various manuscripts upon which W & H base their critical text upon, and shows that even amongst themselves, they disagree in so many places, and also differ vastly from the TR. He thus concludes that manuscripts aleph, B and D are "three of the most scandalously corrupt copies extant: exhibit the most shamefully mutilated texts which are anywhere to be met with: - have become... the depositories of the largest amount of fabricated readings, ancient blunders, and intentional perversions of Truth." (pg 16). Throughout the book, he would continue to critique the W & H text, and also the resulting English translation in similar language. Yet his accusations are always substantiated with very strong proofs, for he would give numerous examples, of how the Greek text of W & H have been corrupted. Herein is where his work is most impressive, for he very meticulously provides copious examples of the various instances in which the new Greek text has departed from the traditional reading through Accident and Design, and have been purported by W & H as being the true reading of the inspired writings. Burgon's research here is indeed invaluable and most amazing, for in each example, he gives both internal and external evidence, first with a very logical explanation as to how W & H have erred, and then the Church fathers and manuscript that attest for the traditional reading of the text. In so many of these instances, W & H have gone against the full evidence of all extant manuscripts, writings of Church fathers, and various translations, and chose instead to take the reading found in the corrupt aleph and B manuscripts which they claim to be the most ancient and therefore most reliable. Indeed, because of their ungodly mutilation of the Greek texts, many previous verses have been chan

Thank God for Dean Burgon!

Unanswered refutation of Westcott & Hort textual theory. Not the easiest one to read about textual criticism, but extremely informative. Burgon was a man who stood straight for the truth against the whole tide of deceit. This is not the book to begin with textual criticism. If you are not acquainted with issues involved, you may find this a bit hard to read. But eventually this is a must read. In this book Burgon exposes the roots of modern day confusion in the area of textual criticism. Truly, man is not to judge GOD'S word. We salute you, Dean John William Burgon, True champion of textual cholarship!

Dean Burgon is a giant!

This book is an in-depth, factual, scientific refutation of the English Revised Version and the underlying manufactured Greek New Testament text. It is a "must-read" for all students of the Bible, since every modern "Bible" (except the NKJV) is based upon this same textual theory, basically, that Burgon proves beyond any reasonable doubt to be pure fantasy!
