Mickey and Minnie help out the circus animals after a storm blows away the tent and all the circus workers. This description may be from another edition of this product.
This charming book is a facsimile edition. Couldn't find a date for the original but it must be from the early- to mid- 1930s, since by 1940, Mickey's appearance had changed quite a bit. Full of that beautiful prose that has one foot in the Victorian era and one in the modern, Pop-Up Mickey Mouse is a delight to read. It is also a welcome change from the watered-down language now peddled to little ones and will stimulate verbal and aesthetic growth with passages such as -- "Minnie carefully adjusted her skirts, and very gently pressed her fingers upon the keys of the great steam organ. A thundering cataract of sound boomed and shrieked and whistled across the fields right into the face of the rising, sleepy sun which paused, startled, for an instant, its chin resting on the horizon of the world." They just don't write 'em like that anymore!!! Today's parents may be taken aback by the sophisticated syntax, but it helps to remember that way back when, authors respected a child's ability to follow complex sentences (and follow them, they can!) The story and pictures are cute, though there are very few pop-ups. But there's plenty here to entertain the adult reader, as well as the usual puns and prat-falls for the kiddies. While each page does have an illustration, there is quite a lot of text for a book aimed at young grade-schoolers. Some kids (especially the media-addicted) might not stay focused on the story long enough to finish. But for those who can groove along with it, Pop-Up Mickey Mouse offers a rare glimpse into a bygone day, when much of America was still small towns and farmland; where dogs were named after planets and mice played calliopes.
