How the astrophysical problem-solving process works
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
I found this book enjoyable and easy to read. I personally have a pretty strong background in astrophysics, but I think the typical amateur astronomy enthusiast wouldn't have any difficulty with this material. The book tells the story of the discovery and elucidation of SS433, a binary star system with a compact stellar remnant (neutron star?) and close-orbiting companion star which is being sucked into it. Its physical properties are remarkable. At the time, and still as far as I know, it was the only object of its type. The object itself is interesting enough, but what I found most interesting is how the story of SS433 is told chronologically. We are shown how the scientific process works, the pace of discovery, and its dual collaberative and competitive nature.
