This comprehensive guide could function as a practical handbook to being monarch (just in case you happen to be in the line of succession ) but barring that, it is still a fascinating look at the workings of "The Queen, Ltd", with details of how her household works; what her homes are like, what she does all day, what all the different royal insignia and jewelry mean; how she relates in practical terms not only to the other members of the royal family, but to the peerage. This book was published just before Prince Charles and Princess Diana married, but I STILL consult this regularly when I have questions or idle curiosity about how things are done. It also has great charts of the extended royal family as well as rundown of the whole peerage (just in case you're not able to find a place for that gargantuan and sickeningly expensive DeBrett's on your shelf). Even after 30 years, it's a great read, I wish it would be updated and reissued! Mr Packard???
