The Riddle of Trufflepugga Path had some issues for me as far as pacing goes. That wasn't a problem for this book. Phil Lovesey seemed to find his rhythm for The Puzzle of the Tillian Wand.
The characters are fantastic (and often hilarious) as always. I was glad to see the return of so many of them...plus some new faces, one in particular slowly becoming one of my favorites. The characters are what drive these stories for me. Yes, the plot itself is VERY intricate, with so many twists and turns I felt a bit "twizzly' at times. But in a good way.
As a fair warning, these books can get DARK. I thought book 1 had some dark elements, but this one was a whole other level...and I'm good with that. Just looking at the cover and reading the back, it doesn't give a hint of how disturbing some scenes can get. It's a good reminder that, despite the funny dalespeak and wonderful silliness of a lot of the stories, that these are not children's books.
As for how much I liked this book: I ordered book 3 before I'd even finished The Puzzle of the Tillian Wand.
