My husband and I are over 60; and looking at a more health conscious lifestyle. We value good, honest, and informative guidance re: health fads and naturopathic ways of health care. The Elmer and McFarland book on Probiotics is so "smart" and user friendly; the non-scientific persons guide to better health. A definite recommendation to anyone with health issues or just trying to maintain good health. This probiotic guide should be well received; it is worth the short time it takes to read it and the small price for great guidance. And doesn't hurt to have a few cartoons included! Well done.
Pro probiotics

A friend of mine gave this book to me although it is not an area I know a lot about. After reading it I am very glad that he did as it contains helpful information on many things I had always wanted to know as well as all sorts of things I never even knew I wanted know. I found the chapters on all the problems that can occur with the digestive system particularly interesting. They are presented in a simple way so that they are easy to understand while still giving you a lot of information (quite often more than I needed). The detail the book goes into is very impressive for a lightweight book but the most important thing is that it maintains an easy to read tone making it more of a reading book than a dry reference book. The clear presentation of scientific studies (including references) on probiotics studies is a real plus as I was able to see all of the collected knowledge on this interesting new therapeutic. I felt that the authors made a very good case for their more widespread use. In conclusion I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in probiotics, or an interest in alternative therapies to common illnesses such as diarrhea, urinary tract infections, allergies and digestive problems. The book is suitable for the casual reader and for those, like me, who have a background in medical science.
