"The Potomac", one of the most celebrated volumes in the Rivers of America series, returns to print in a new paperback edition. This description may be from another edition of this product.
I'm hardly objective; I read this book at an impressionable age, met Fritz Gutheim, and with his help, made a career-launching movie about the river. Gutheim generously helped me get support for the film, gave it his imprimatur, yet never tried to influence my work, except when I asked for his help. Now to the book. It is an historical exploration of a river which is as important as any in America -- a way of viewing the past sideways, from your imaginary canoe in the river, in the company of a widely-read, fascinating companion. And he never splashes a paddle on you, either. Cleanly written, and with beautiful woodcut engravings. Some of the phrases in the book have stayed with me for three decades. A treat. Inevitably it's out of date in some respects, but give Gutheim a break; he's been gone awhile. And his treatment of the river's rich history largely stands. Another great book on this river is a collection of quotations, artfully arranged by Paul Metcalf: "Waters of Potowmack."
