The Second Book in the Series

This is the second book set in the reign of Henry VIII, with the leading character Sir Roger Shallot and Benjamin Daunbey have certainly got their hand full this time. Someone is passing vital information to the King of France and Sir Roger and Daunbey are sent to investigate the matter. They have no idea whether the information is coming from the English court or another source. The only clue that the pair have is that the code name of the spy is Raphael. They are soon caught up in a maelstrom of danger, death and treachery. Not only are their own lives at risk, but the whole of England could be in danger. Paul Doherty seems to be able to turn his hand to virtually any century in history. With these novels he has stepped forward a pace in time to the Tudor period from his usual offerings in the 14th century, but still seems able to capture the feeling for the period in history that he is currently writing about. As far as historical mysteries go, he is the consummate professional.
