Enjoyed the book more or less

I enjoyed the book. However I am distressed that the German soldier who was enlisted by his dad seems to have gotten off very lightly. From what I have read he would not have been released to gather information. Which he stopped quickly. I think it would be possible that he was allowed to live at all based on cooperation. I think he would have been executed. He sent Jews to their deaths for two years. I think doing this because Daddy made him wore thin. I appreciate seeing his guilty conscience but look at what he did!!
