Helpful Book....

Stobart provides much practical help for painting in the field. The best part is that it's like hearing the master speak. I understand there is a video out there as well. The illustrations are in color, and the sense of being in touch with such an experienced artist is gratifying. I don't see too many 'How-to" books now that capture the transerence of insight and skills like this book by Stobart.

Dear John

Your book and the series of videos you produced to go with it are magnificent. However your focus on only young artists making a living is too narrow. There are plenty of mid aged painters who are breaking out of the studio rut and taking their fresh art to the public. Now I think you should make it clear that there is room for serious and committed artists of all ages to "Live The Artists Life" Tthis book is a must for any and all pleine aire painters. Even with the rhetoric it is stunning and inspirational. The videos better come out on DVD soon or I'll pine away waitning for them.

Excellent for beginning and experienced painters alike

John Stobart describes to us his personal life as a struggling art student through to his present life as an enormously successful maritime painter. He describes his life and passion for art with the wit and charm of a typical Englishman. He tells us of the days when he was forced to used old burlap sacks for canvases and wood discarded from construction sites for stretchers. Part one of the book explores his life in part, and his progression throughout the years. This is invaluable to a beginning artist as we learn from his mistakes. He describes the trials and tribulations of working with Galleries owners and clients in regards to their expectations of the artist. Stobart also informs us of his palette of choice and working materials for outdoor oil sketching plus more. Part two of the book discusses works of art created on site with oil sketches done by Stobart and many of his fellow friends in the art industry. Overall the book is extremely simple reading and doesn't complicate any issues at all, I recommend it as a reference book, a guide to art, and a delightfully humurous companion that can inspire the artist into creating something better for him or herslef. Supberb reading from a truly insprirational man.
