I bought this book on a whim,in Gaulala, CA at Four-Eyed Frog Books book store while on vacation to read in my hotel room, and am very glad that I did! The subject matter of San Francisco's pre-sixties past, & Italian-American culture interested me as I am a Bay Area native of Italian descent. I read it in two nights as it so held my interest story-wise. I was very interested in the character Rosalina and what the future held for her. History-wise it was a fascinating account of a fascinating city. The author George Rathmell did his homework. It is a story about a young woman's coming of age but so much more. It is also a glimpse of what the pre-feminist, pre-civil rights, pre-gay rights era must have been like to live in. Subtle example of class differences as well, without any preachy self-righteous banter. Simply matter of fact account of that era's values and expectations. This book lacks the hype and hoopla and publicity that much more well financed authors get. I hope this does not hurt it's appeal or sales. It seems to be written by an imaginative & talented, down to earth author. Let's support good authors of the world!
