Mark unwittingly ingests a bacteriophage which interacts with a bacterium in his gut microbiome. Shortly after that, he begins to experience random visions of unfamiliar people and places. As time goes on, he is able to direct his visions to people he knows. Mark consults a neurologist friend, Jim, to help find the cause of his strange visions. But, unknown to Mark, his neurologist friend also does anti-bioterrorism work for the government, and has been studying microbes that infect the human microbiome. Loyalties clash when Mark has visions of another clairvoyant who tells him about the history of people with such capabilities. The outcome is not always pleasant for the clairvoyant. But Jim wants to pursue the science to learn people can become clairvoyant because of a slight change to the gut microbiome.
