Life at Prep School

Grey, Ian. "The Pelican Fables", iUniverse, 2006. Life at Prep School Amos Lassen All of us have read many coming-of-age stories and many of them have been set in prep schools. "The Pelican Fables" is one such book but it is different in that along with the eroticism is a beautifully written novel. It goes where few coming-of-age stories go--to the hot sex but as it does, it also tells us about the tenderness and the excitement of a first homosexual encounter. Carter Morgan is a new teacher at Melbourne Preparatory School for Boys and he begins teaching there before attending Harvard to do his doctorate. It is at the school that he comes to terms with his sexuality but this is a bit different in that he becomes with a student, Adam Proffit. He tries to avoid the relationship but Adam is bold. Carter has problems reconciling his position as a faculty member and the holiness of the teacher-student relationship and his attraction for the boy. Managing to control himself for a while, the two eventually come together and their futures are decided by the school's administration which does not understand. Carter and Adam are forced into making a decision that will forever change their lives. There is a lot said in this short little book of only 135 pages. Grey gives us wonderful character development and the plot is well structured. Adam is longing for a lover and he is also an excellent student. He is good looking as is his roommate, Kellum, a jock who constantly teases Adam. Carter and Adam both come from middle-class backgrounds unlike Kellum who has very wealthy parents. This, in itself, causes tension plus the fact that Kellum has a great deal of self-confidence moves the plot along. As we watch the relationship between the three, we get an interesting look at prep school life. When the news comes forth of the affair between Adam and Carter, Carter is summoned before the homophobic headmaster and Adam realizes that his roommate and he are no longer the friends that he thought that they were. I can't give away any more of the plot because if I do O will spoil the reading experience. Grey gives us excellent insight into the coming-out process and his drawing of the characters is quite good. Anyone who has ever worked in education is aware of what can happen and reading how Carter tried so hard to control himself rings true. Adam, on the other hand, was a bit more free and this brought about a contradiction between the two major characters. This is quite an amazing book that is skillfully written with just the right amount of eroticism.

One Terrific Read !

This is one outstanding read! A little too short for my taste (only 135 pages) as the story of Adam, Kellum and Carter could have gone on for several more chapters. The character development was exquisite as well as the plot development. There is one chapter (chapter 14) where Kellum and Adam visit with Kellum's sister and two of her friends in New York. The group goes to a club called Princess Dipsy's. It was such a well written chapter that I can only hope on my next trip to NYC to see if the place actually exists. Anyway, the author, Ian Grey, has given us a wonderful story, full of romance, and some very accurate emotional situations. He leaves the door open for a sequel and I must say I will be one of the first in line to purchase a copy. Thanks Mr. Gray for an outstanding and most enjoyable read.

Great Read!

The Pelican Fables is a thought-provoking glimpse into the insulated world of an all-male prep school. The author makes it easy to understand the sexual confusion a young man might feel in this environment as well as the understandable fear he might have of acting on his impulses. I could not put it down.

Great Read!!!

"The Pelican Fables" is provocative, poetic, evoctive, erotic and beautiful, all in one. For anyone who read "A Separate Peace" or "Cathcher in the Rye," but found the smoldering, homoerotic tension ungratifying, "The Pelican Fables" takes you where these literary classics were too afraid to go - all the way! But in the end, the reader will find that "The Pelican Fables" is a beautifully written story that is not ashamed of being steamy and which wonderfully captures the tenderness and excitement of the characters' first homosexual experience and the effects this has on their lives. Bravo, Ian Grey!!! Please write more!!!

A great read.

I just read Pelican Fables. I couldn't put it down! It's fun and engaging. I have a friend who went to prep school and he said the book is accurate in describing the life there (wow). But don't just read it for the steamy sex scenes, it's also a poignant glimpse into the difficulties of the closeted life.
