Book Overview

We all know what the words cat and dog and mother and tree mean. What we really need is a dictionary that helps us with the tough words, like elucubrate, or demesne, or cynosure. True, a standard dictionary can bail us out when we run across a tough word at home or in a library. But we often read elsewhere--in a doctor's waiting room or on a plane, or while on vacation. What do we do then?

Exactly what I needed

I read a lot. I have an excellent vocabulary (according to the Reader's Digest quizzes). But still there are words that I run across that need defining. I've gone through lots of little dictionaries. None are capable. I have several 20 pounders that do the job, but who wants to carry one of those around? I have every electronic gadget on the market. Nothing's as good as a little book you can reach for in a few seconds. So I thought, why doesn't somebody print a small dictionary that leaves out "door, foot, and tree" instead of leaving out "epistemological" ? This is it. The definitions are not elaborate. That's fine. If you really want to be epistemological about it, then you can research the word later, but have this book handy when you're reading. Invaluable. Buy it.
