A True Story of a Prisoner of war, and a young girl Resistance fighter in Nazi Occupied Europe.

A gripping TRUE story of how two people met through the terror and harsh war of Nazi occupied Europe. Bruce an enlisted man from New Zealand, who joined to do his part in stopping Hitler and his Regime from taking over all of Europe is captured by the Germans as prisoner of war, and a young girl Josefine who has joined the Resistance fighters to do her part in helping her country regain its Freedom. Josefine's older brother who is also a resistance fighter, had been captured and for over a month the family knows nothing of his whereabouts...is he dead, alive, in a camp..no one can seem to find out.She decides to pass a note through the wire fence around a POW camp, and this is where her and Bruce have their first chance encounter. This book was excellant from start to finish, a wonderful true story full of accuracy about all the terrible, horrible, hardships Bruce and all the captured Allied Soldiers had to endure in the POW camps, from, No food, water, severe and cruel punishment at the hands of some guards, to the work camps that were even worse.Bruce finally is sent to a 3rd pow work camp, and it is in this camp where he works for a farmer, who has lost all his farm hands because of the war, that Bruce and pure luck and Fate would have it...runs into the girl at the wire, Josefine, as it is her aunt and uncle who own the farm..and she has gone to them for cover...as her resistance work has put her in serious danger, and it is suspected the Nazi's are looking for her. When Bruce see's her in the barn he immediately recognizes her, but he had to explain to her he was the one who took the note from her at camp, and kept her from being shot at by the guards, by REFUSING to move from the wire fence, to give her a chance to run away. He also explained how he tried to find out as much as he could about her brother..but sadly no one in his camp knew a thing...and he often watched and waited for her to come back ..for months. She explained what had happened over the months from hurting her ankle while running away that day, absolutely sure she was going to be captured and having to lay in rest for weeks..to just being scared to risk going back. While at the farm, Bruce and Josefine, see each other everday and can't help but to start to feel a strong attracttion to each other, from the lengthy conversations, to sneaked little glances, and a quick little touches, of finger tips, and brushing against each other to smiles and giggles. All this leads to a Romance they both feel for each other, with promises of that no matter what happens to Bruce in the Pow camp, he will come back for her ..no matter what..and will love her forever, as she professes the same to him. You can feel all the Emotions of all the Characters throughout this whole story...with every little thing they go through..and all the while you need to remember this is all true...and is totally unbelievable how these two people are brought together in such horrid circumstances...find friendship, and true love...that finally after the war has ended, Bruce and Josefine are finally brought together once again, after much legal red tape from both countries. There is Sooooo much more to this story...with many different events, that have them in so much danger, it's a wonder they made it out alive...yet were able to finally get clearance from both their country's for Josefine and Bruce to be together. It has great description of all the Characters, Bruce had meet along the way, from his beloved Friends to friendship's in the pow camp, to guards that some proved more humane than anyone would ever imagine, to all the events and dangers, from escape, to almost being caught, to the Harsh treatment that the Russians had inflicted on innocent victims after capturing the Germans and taking over and storming different little villages, the book has it all. A wonderfully told story, of war, danger, and sacrifice and unexpected love during an unimaginable time in their life.
