What an incredibly powerful book set in an incredibly intricate apocalyptic world of dreams, viruses, faith, and brotherhood. Cain's first person voice is completely relatable, relevant, insightful, honest, raw, self-deprecating, and oftentimes hilarious. Struggling from grief, loneliness, anger, and lack of confidence, Cain makes a lot of mistakes trying to find the cure for the Nightmare Virus that's quickly overtaking and destroying the world's population. Going back and forth from the Real World to Tenebrae, he learns about greed, trust, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, and faith - things he only knew about superficially prior to becoming infected. Cain's setbacks, failures, triumphs, and discoveries became my own as I journeyed with him through the decaying roads of the Real World and strange dreamscape of Tenebrae to witness dark clash against light. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot and lots of fantastical and imaginative creatures and circumstances to keep you turning the pages. There is a bit of romance but it takes a backseat to the fight between good with truth vs. evil with illusions. If you love YA fantasy, you will absolutely love this book. Don't miss it!
