Excellent History of the Confederation

Merrill Jensen's "New Nation" is an excellent account of the first constitutional government of the United States in the period of 1781 to 1789. Jensen refutes old myths and nationaist propaganda about how the Confederation government was a failure. Jensen rightly points out the accomplishments of the first Federal government. He points out the laws to settle the huge western territory, the commissions develpoed to settle land disputes between states, and the establishment of foreign diplomatic establishments. He also points out the propaganda and power of the nationalists in the nation who were attempting to create a centralized government. He shows how many Americans were quite content with a weak central government and thought the Confederation was a sucess.Overall and excellent book.
