great guide to inductive Bible study

This is a guide not on studying a specific book of the Bible, but on how to study any part of the Bible. It carefully lays out the skills and steps you can take to dig deep into Scripture and accurately learn what it says, what it means, and how it applies to your life. I so appreciate the author's attitude that you can teach me something, or you can teach me how to learn it for myself and then I can more fully appropriate that truth in my life. The book is perhaps not ideally organized, but given the scope and depth of inductive Bible study methods, it's certainly an accessible, reliable resource.

Become a more observant reader

Oletta Wald's "Joy of Discovery" is a brilliant resource for people who want to improve their Bible study. Both individuals and groups, beginners and advanced readers, students and teachers can benefit tremendously. (See companion volumes too.) This book is NOT a commentary, but presents a variety of simple methods and tools for reading the Bible more attentively and observantly. The observant reader, in turn, is better able to ask the questions necessary for sound interpretation and understanding. This book will not teach you everything you need to know in order to interpret and understand Scripture, but it will teach you many essential basics that everyone should know but many people never learn. Because the book is not a commentary, anyone can effectively use the methods and tools in this book to study Scripture, regardless which church or religious community he or she belongs to. It even helps improve skills for reading books other than the Bible.
