Long time Vatican analyst and Papal biographer examines the unjust persecution of our greatest Catho

Jesuitical (in the best sense of the word) Peter Hebblethwaite, prolific Vatican based journalist, biographer, analyst and writer may be best remembered for his insightful Year of Three Popes and best loved for his John XXIII: Pope of the Council (Fount Classics), which appeared under several redactions, including posthumously. He also wrote of good Pope John's successor in Paul VI: The First Modern Pope, as well as examining JPII in John Paul II (A Pictorial Biography) as well as Next Pope, The - Revised & Updated: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at How the Successor to John Paul II Will be Elected and Where He Will Lead The Church, among others. But among his most important and impassioned writings we find this present work, published in 1980 shortly after the great Dominican preacher and teacher and theologian the Reverend Father Edward Schillebeeckx was asked a few questions about the mweaning of his monumental work Jesus: An experiment in Christology and the great professor of Catholic theology and Doctor of Theology the Reverend Father Hans Kung received unkind and closed-minded replies to his one word question: Infallible? An Inquiry. This present book prophetically poses the pressing and painful questions which would disasterously too soon self-fulfill, and thus provides us with an interesting background to the past and present papacies, and food for the contemplation of our Pilgrim Church and our call to repentence and prayer. In this sense it serves us as lectio divina, as repeatedly defined by Our Holy father Saint Benedict in his Rule for Monasteries, a source of profound prayer illuminating and strengthening our ecclesial and spiritual journey, and rebuilding our Church as the People of God and the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ. The section written and reported by Hebblethwaite is excellent, which he amplifies and supports with appendices gathering primary sources not otherwise easily available to the curious layperson. We find for instance Father Schillebeeckx's written clarification and Father Kung's written Appeal. We also here may read declarations of the CDF (dated 12/15/1979), of the German Bishop's Conference (dated 12/18/1979) and of the Holy See (dated 12/30/1979) to see what kind of Nativity sentiments the hierarchy held for these leading theologians, with wishes for their future endeavours in the New Year. As you can see in comparing the dates of these documents with the date of this book's publication, it follows hard upon, and thus we have the freshest and most profound insight from this long time Vatican observor, whose wisdom and keen literary skills we may enjoy in this important book. Do not let the title put you off, but take the time to read it carefully, thoughtfully, prayerfully, and let us rejoin, together, our vocation and calling within our Pilgrim, universal and Catholic Church. Let us not so late despair but walk, in Faith, Hope and Charity, one with another. And as Our Holy Father Saint Benedict bles
