Book Overview

Building beyond Lakoff's election-year best-seller, Don't Think of an Elephant, this new book shows how the values of American voters are dramatically shifting. With the arrival of the 2008 election year, a rising "feminized majority"-made up of both women and men-is emerging as the pivotal force in American politics. Emerging trends show these values are broadly progressive and address not just the needs of women but the general interests of society...

best book i've ever read

this book is amazing. it's epic in every way and should be read by anyone who has an interest in: politics, feminism, the gender-gap, and so much more. adam's thoughts and theories on how things work continue to hold true: america is crying for their feminized majority to be acted upon, but jerks like the glenn beck and the tea-baggers are stealing the spotlight. people want healthcare for all, they want marriage equity, we want a more equal system---based on qualities like compassion, empathy, pacifism, and environmentalism. but the fear machine continues to turn its wheels and make us feel like we have to pour more and more money into the military and defense spending. if we invest in ourselves now, we'll be happier sooner and later. the sooner we realize that we're all in this together, the better. thank you so much katherine and charles.

Starry-eyed Cynic

In a time of pessimism, here are some grounds for optimism. A change in values is certainly a major step toward a change in social structure. Derber and Adam empirically show that woman are less likely to be militarist and competitive, more likely to look out for the welfare of the community. Under Republican regimes, these values get dismissed as soft and even unpatriotic, but this is precisely what Democrats must embrace if they want to present a real alternative. For Democrats, offering relief from the Republican aggressive foreign policy and an economic policy that sacrifices the majority for the very rich may be the only winning strategy. I urge everyone hoping for a glimpse of hope to get this book.

Thought-provoking and clever

This book makes a powerful argument for the re-imagining of American politics. The authors' suggestions for the future of politics just may be the key to progressive change in America.

very insightful!

This book could not come at a better time in American politics-Adams and Derber have started or atleast re-energized the discussion about the gendered nature of values and decisions as they relate to u.s. politics-it would be worthwhile for anyone looking to see an overhaul in washington to read this book and understand these social dynamics!
