This book was co-written by Charles Goodall and Julia Gasow, both monumental in their contribution to the breed. This was my first book on English Springers. Charles Goodall's hunting section was interesting, even though I do not hunt. It was very helpful to learn about field training, much of which applies to everyday handling of companion dogs as well. This is covered well enough that as a newcomer to the breed, it was easy to understand how important all the foundations in field training are. I have often been asked about hunting, and always refer peple to this book. I was more interested in the second half of the book, written by Julia Gasow. It covers show dogs and bloodlines, including many of her highly successful and record-setting produce. It was wonderful to see a great many names in my first dog's pedigree included. This helped me to evaluate what I had and what I could do with it. It also covered show grooming, which in later versions was covered in even more detail. Overall, it was a very good book to introduce a newcomer to the breed and its different dimensions.
