Buchanan takes on an entire town run by a powerful and ruthless family

In a genre where there are some very excellent writers, Jonas Ward is my favorite. His hero, Tom Buchanan, tries to be a peaceable man, but circumstances seem to steer trouble his way. In this case, he is riding away from some previous trouble in Mexico where he fought for a Mexican general who was trying to overthrow the government. He comes across a young girl unconscious lying face down in the water. He pulls her out and resuscitates her. She has been raped by the son of a powerful man in Agrytown, a village in Agry County run by a man named Agry. This leads to a chain of events where Buchanan is fighting the entire town, including Agry's hired guns. In typical Buchanan style, he faces the odds with a stoic determination and wit, never losing sight of his noble nature. At the end, he regains his money and even throws a few coins to Simon Agry, the man who repeatedly tried to have him killed. A true hero in the mold of the man in the classic Western portrayal, Buchanan moves from place to place, fighting for just causes and generally leaving things in a better condition than they were in when he arrived.
