Probably the most comprehensive history of musical theater I've read
Published by Gary Carlson , 4 years ago
Besides being one of the most talented playwright/lyricists of the 20th century, Lerner was also surprisingly knowledgeable about every aspect of not only American theater but European theatrical music as well. My first theater role was as Henry Higgins in 'My Fair Lady' in college, which began my love of musical theater that has never waned.
Also recommended: "The Street Where I Live" in which Lerner tells his own story of writing 'My Fair Lady,' 'Gigi' and 'Camelot' plus interesting anecdotes about his earlier 'Brigadoon' and 'Paint Your Wagon.'
