A gem of a book, Manual for Motherhood, arrived on my doorstep just yesterday. I felt compelled to start reading and really, I could not put it down! This book of essays, edited by Christine Fugate, gives mothers, of all ages, a voice and highlights the difficulties and hidden treasures of being a parent. These are our family memories. The tales are engaging and alive because these stories are real. They reflect our mothering community and also profile and validate the hard work, obsessing, and complete dedication that all of us bring to being a mother. The essays reflect all the different eras of motherhood. I have two teens in my house and it was nice to be whisked back to the days when they were cuddly and little, and to be reminded of what was important to me in that time, which is all together different that what I am dealing with these days. Some are funny. I loved "Motherhood: It's a Man's Job" by Frank Leggett . Frank writes, "All children are liars. You heard me. Barefaced, unrepentant, remorseless liars. They are as incorrigible as a roomful of Enron executives. " Many of the essays you want to read a few times, just to really soak in the wisdom. Geri Jacobs writes, "A new world opens by simply becoming a mom." This books comes highly recommended to our mothers, our sisters, our friends, and of course, the soon to be moms everywhere.
Great for New Moms

I was honored to be a contributor to this anthology and thrilled to read the final product. I love being a part of a book that spells out every side of motherhood. I look forward to giving this book to new moms because sometimes the tired old warnings about newborns not sleeping much and how motherhood love is instant and unwavering are not exactly accurate or all encompassing. There is so much more to this job called "mommy" and this book spells it out well. Hooray Christine, for finding such a perfect mix of advice.
