Hee Haw Browny!

Here's a pleasant little diversion about Tom Fremantle's foot journey across the Southeastern United States accompanied by an old Texas mule named Browny. Tom's expedition somewhat retraces one of his ancestor's journey during the civil war. That ancestor, Colonel Arthur Fremantle, comes across as a sort of dorky British Forrest Gump the way he pops up in the company of various famous people and in the midst of historical events. Tom's journey is about as exciting as, well, a guy on a long walk with a mule. On the way, however, the tale is redeemed by an array of colorful and likeable characters, vivid descriptions, and digressions about Colonel Arthur's commentaries and other historical references. There is nothing immensely scholastic about this book if you're looking to learn something new about history, but the author's insight about Americans and the United States as looked at from a Brit's point of view is enjoyable to read. The writing is fluid and well-crafted--an easy read.

A cracking read

This book is a gem. A pacy, informative and at times, hilarious read. It delves into many aspects of American history, from the Civil War to 9/11. It also offers an engrossing view of the South, without pandering to the stereotypes. Browny the mule is a splendid travelling companion and she and the author get to meet a huge cross section of charaters throughout their epic walk from Mexico to New York. Strongly recommended, especially if you're after something fresh and highly original.
