Descriptions WAY overdone!

The story line and basic writing of this book is very good. BUT the descriptions are overdone and overblown constantly...to the point it became tedious to read.

Beautifully gripping tale of atonement and forgiveness...

When I first picked up Nicole Baart's latest novel, the Moment Between, I wasn't sure if it was a story that I'd be interested in reading. The mention of a woman's obsession on the back cover took me aback, but after reading a few pages of the first chapter, I discovered that my hesitance was ill-conceived! This tale of two sisters told in the past and present, with one battling mental illness and one shouldering the burden of her care, resonated with some situations in my life, but also in ways with the parable of the Prodigal Son. The story itself is beautifully crafted with deep exploration into the lives of the two women, with an honest look at Bipolar Disorder, and is also interspersed with many metaphors that mirror the acceptance and growth as one of God's children. This novel CAPTIVATED me and wouldn't let go until I found myself fighting tears and seeking further grace, further atonement for my life through Abigail and Hailey's story. I highly recommend this book!!! One of the best reads ever!!!

My Top Christian Fiction Author

While I have read a lot of Christian fiction in the past, my choices have lately become much more selective. I was originally captured by Nicole Baart's first book, and when I saw that she had written another book - The Moment Between - I immediately bought it. I had come to love Baart. Baart does not present perfect package sorts of books. The writing is solid, lyrical, and even literary. The characters have dimension, and the plot has much depth. The threads of redemption and hope are present and real without being canned. In addition, Baart wraps three stories into one, fitting them together very effectively and driving the reader through the plot. (The publisher's back-cover summary is a bit off, in my opinion, just to warn you. I thought it was going to be a creepy-way-over-the-top-obsession kind of read, but it was more relational than the summary suggests.) I can confidently say that Baart is my favorite Christian fiction author. If her books stay at the caliber she has presented in her first three, I will be a faithful reader of her subsequent novels. If Christian fiction is not your typical read, Baart will likely be a enjoyable choice. If Christian fiction is your normal read, reading Baart will surely be a refreshing experience - it was for me.

Poignant, gripping, and thought-provoking

What a moving and interesting book! It covers a range of topics that generally aren't written about, and the characters are so well-developed that it really feels like you are in the story. Emotionally written, driven by a plot with twists and turns, and the spiritual element is both subtle and powerful. Nicole Baart is a gem of a writer! Read this - you won't regret it!

A Fine Wine

I just finished the last page of The Moment Between, by Nicole Baart. I feel like I always feel after finishing a wonderful book - satisfied and a little sad. Satisfied because the ending was beautifully written and thought-provoking, and sad because I hate to say goodbye to the world Nicole created. The Moment Between explores the ties of family, the chains of mental illness, and the power of redemption. This three-tiered story centers on sisters, Abigail and Hailey Bennett. It begins with a tragedy that alters Abigail's life and catapults her into the throws of obsession. This obsession propels her to leave her successful life in Florida and leads her to a vineyard in British Columbia. Nicole Baart masterfully weaves together three distinct time periods in Abigail's life: her childhood with Hailey, immediately following the tragedy, and her trek to B.C. in pursuit of her obsession. The three stories come together bit by bit, revealing intriguing layers of Abigail's life until the very end. The story is rich in psychology, dealing with family dysfunction and the impact of mental illness. Nicole Baart's prose are captivating and beautiful, reading like poetry and gliding over the tongue like a fine wine, which is appropriate, as wine is used symbolically throughout the novel. The characters are deep, the plot is piercing, and the message is subtle, yet profound. If you are looking for a story that will stick with you long after you shut the book, this is a must read.

A haunting story about family

In the opening pages of Nicole Baart's novel, The Moment Between, we meet Abigail Bennett, a successful accountant who lives in Florida. A tragedy rips apart her fragile life and sends her on a mission to exact revenge. Someone has to pay for what's happened. And it must be either Abigail or a man named Tyler Kamp. As Abigail tracks Tyler to Canada, the reader gets bits and pieces of the whole story through glimpses into Abigail's childhood and brief scenes from the tragedy itself. This book is filled with characters as real as your neighbors. You fall into their world, enraptured by what's taken place and how it all came to be. Nicole Baart weaves a haunting story that keeps you riveted as you hope for Abigail to surrender her heart to forgiveness with each turn of the page, almost praying that she won't do as she plans. I liked this book, though it's not the kind I usually read. I tend to love general market, action-adventure stories over the slow paced, literary type. But this book was far from boring. Nicole Baart built tension into every scene, and that's what kept me turning the pages, thoroughly enraptured by the story. I recommend this one to readers who love real characters suffering through real-life circumstances. This book will bring tragedy right up in your face and cause you to take a good look. But it will also remind you that no sin is ever beyond forgiveness.
